                                                                                                ACTION ALERT

Support a Tax Credit for Corporations that Donate to Scholarship Funds

Action Needed:    We need e-mails to Governor Rell and members of the Connecticut General Assembly asking them to support a tax credit for corporations that donate to scholarship funds.  The scholarships would be used for lower and middle-income families to send their children to a private, religious or out-of-district public school.

Background:   The proposal would allow tax credits for C Corporations that donate to scholarship funds.   The scholarships would be used for lower and middle-income families to send their children to a private, religious or out-of-district public school.

With the state of Connecticut facing a budget crisis, this proposal would save the taxpayers of Connecticut up to $5 million a year and provide lower and middle-income families the option to choose a school they might not otherwise be able to afford.

Private and religious school enrollment has already decreased by 3% for the 2008/09 school year, costing the taxpayers of Connecticut approximately $20 million.  Connecticut’s private and religious schools already save the taxpayers of this state over $700 million year.

Summary:  Governor Rell will introduce her state budget the first week of February and it is our hope that Governor will include this proposal in her budget.   We also need heo support of members of the Connecticut General Assembly as budget negotiations progress after the Governor introduces her budget.

We are requesting all Catholic school parents, friends, teachers and administrators send e-mails to the Governor and to their State Senators and Representatives asking them to support this bill.

The Governor will introduce her budget on February 4 so we need you to contact your elected officials immediately.
