Governor Dannel Malloy was sworn into office on January 5, 2011, along with 187 members of the Connecticut General Assembly.Governor Malloy is the first Democrat Governor to serve in Connecticut in 20 years. The make-up of the General Assembly changed dramatically.Republicans won an additional 14 seats in the State House of Representatives. The Democrats continue to control the House with 100 members and 51 Republicans. The Senate Republicans won an additional seat totally 13 members, with Democrats controlling 23 seats.
The Governor and General Assembly now face the task of dealing with a $3.7 billion deficit. The new Governor has given us a view on how he plans to deal with this deficit by constantly stating that all of us will need to sacrifice to deal with the deficit. We will not know what the Governor means by shared sacrifice until he introduces his budget in the middle of February.
